People who constantly talk about themselves or are involved in self promotion do not make many friends. The same logic can be applied to twitter. Twitter is a social media platform which connects millions of people together.

When tweeting, you should bear a few things in mind: be careful with your punctuations, do not self promote, use proper and better link shorteners, avoid idle chats, be involved with the community and keep it simple.

I have elaborated my points below and hope you all find it useful.

1. Use the Best Link Shortener

There are many link shorteners these days such as bit.ly, ow.ly which are used more often and are considered legit when compared to the tinyurls. I don’t know whats up with tiny but I noticed that people don’t like it much. I prefer ow.ly as it is much shorter than other long services and is backed up by hootsuite. Using the right link up is important.

2. Request For a ReTweet

If you think that requesting or asking people for a retweet is considered a spam then think again because you are wrong. Several researches proved that words such as “Please ReTweet” are often the most retweetable words along with “Check Out” and my favorite “New Blog Post”.

Most ReTweetable Words: Twitter, Please, ReTweet, Post, Blog, Social, Free, Media, Help, Follow, Great, 10, Free

3. Cut the Crap in Your Chit-Chat

Twitter is a powerful social media platform and not your personal online journal where you can jot down almost everything you do in a day. Now let’s face it, people do not want to know about your daily life such as your sleeping time, watching TV or what is your girl friend up to. Of course unless you are Kim Kardashian *drool* or someone famous.

According to a research, verbs ending in “ing” are least retweeted words such as going, watching etc. Well unless it is really interesting

Least ReTweetable Words: lol, Haha, Game, Going, Tired, Home, Night, Bed, Hey, Tomorrow, Today, Some, Sleep, Back, Gonna, Bye

4. Break News

This is very simple. Original stuff is always appreciated and enjoyed; it is considered more popular because we all are hungry for new stuffs. We want to see or read something new and that is why original content is most likely to get retweeted.

5. Limit Punctuation and Say NO to Semicolons

I personally use several form of punctuation in my tweets but I have learnt it to do it right. Almost 97% of ReTweets contain punctuation such as colons, commas, exclamation and question marks. I am not saying that you can’t use punctuation at all but you should limit it and say no to semicolons as it is the only “unretweetable punctuation mark”.

6. Keep Your Emotion to Yourself

Nobody on twitter has time to listen and promote your crap such as stupid, negative feelings and thoughts. Twitter is about sharing knowledge: Tweets about your work, media, money, finance, How-To, celebrities are much more popular and are more retweetable than the other weird tweets concerning negative feelings, swear words and self promotion.

7. Tweet at the Right Time

Tweeting at the right time can get tons of retweets. Now think about this: when you are analyzing the twitter market and the followers, you should find out the best time to get your tweet across. For example: Tweets at 4-5 pm on Fridays are more likely to get retweeted. Tweeting on Sundays might not be that affective as most of us spend time with our family. Now you do the math and the calculations. Keep it neat and simple.

Feel free to share your thoughts. Last but not the least, I would like to thank viral marketing scientist Dan Zarella who has done an amazing job and has contributed to my list.
